Rigoberta Menchú was born was born on January 9, 1959. She was born into an Indian family in the Quiche branch of the Mayan culture. All her early life, she worked on a farm with her family near the highlands where they all lived. Rigoberta Menchú is a political human right activist from Guatemala. She made her life into reaching for the rights for Guatemala indigenous feminists. She was going for those rights when the Guatemalan Civil War was happening. She was doing that because she wanted herself and her country to have indigenous rights.
Rigoberta Menchú fought for indigenous rights for her country. After working at the farm with her family, she joined an activity at the Catholic Church. When she joined this, she was only a teenager, fighting for women's rights movement. In 1979, Rigoberta Menchú joined the CUC which then led to her brother being killed by the army and her father being killed because he lived in the Spanish Embassy with other peasants. Her mother was killed by someone arresting her, torturing her, and raping her. After everything she did for her country, she got her Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 for archiving social justice. Soon after that, her autobiography got published. This was positive because back then, people didn’t have many rights. That’s why Rigoberta Menchú fought for rights for her country.
