Last year at Francisco Middle School, school days started at 9:10 on a regular day. This year, school days start at 9:00. The first bell rings at 8:55 which means you get 5 minutes to go to your locker and to get to class on time. Even though we have longer passing periods, getting to school on time is harder because it’s in the morning. One reason why schools should start at 9:10 again is so that fewer kids get to school late, because you have that extra 10 minutes to get here. This year more and more students are arriving at school late because we only have 5 minutes to get to class, and sometimes there are problems getting to school. If some students get to school by bus, then sometimes the buses break down, which causes them to be late because they have to switch buses. When you are late to class, not only do you get tardy, but you miss class time. When you miss class time, you are missing on what the class is learning and maybe even classwork that needs to be done. So, when school starts a little later, it can prevent some students from being late to school and missing a lot of classwork. Some students come really late and completely miss 1st period, or some come just a few minutes after the bell. Regardless of what time the students come, they still miss out things when coming late.

Have you considered timing yourself to see how much you are on your phone or staring on a screen one day…? Well, on average, us teens spend four and a half hours on their phones a day. That is a lot of time just staring at your phone or electronic. The study said that teens spend four and a half hours on their phones. Most teens spend way more time than just that on their screens. When you are on your phone or staring at a screen for too much, it can affect your focus on schoolwork or your brain. 11,000 kids and teens went to get MRI’s to check their brains and track how screen time affects us over time. From the video we saw in social studies called “60 minutes”, it shows that the population of smartphone users grew really fast. When the smartphone population grew, that made social media population grow as well. Most people I know mostly spend their screen time on Instagram, Youtube, or Snapchat. For people who game, they spend most of their time on Fortnite or any game they prefer to play. When kids have free time, whether that is after school, during school, on break, or on weekends most kids get to go on their phones. Screen time is used for checking their social media or searching something up on the internet. Most teens use their smartphone to text friends or facetime friends and not for useful stuff, but it’s also said that when teens go on their phone to contact friends, they feel more connected to each other. Some moms set a timer on their child’s phone, so they only have limited time to go on their phones each day, but other than that, you are in charge of how much you stare at your screen a day. One thing to keep in mind is that, if you spend too much time on your screens, it can affect you. New Year Resolutions are goals you make before the year is over (Best start in November). The purpose of them is to help you achieve your personal goals. If you have a goal that you want to achieve in the future, you can help yourself by making that goal your New Year’s Resolution. If you preserver then you might achieve the goal. A good way to achieve that goal is to put your mindset to it. Once you know what your goal is, then work towards that goal every day. If you be consistent with your goal, it makes it easier for your mind to believe you can achieve that goal. You should really consider, making a new years resolution because it can help you experience new things and achieve a goal in your life.
The Beach Clean up took place on Sunday, December 9. People from the 8th grade went out to help if they wished to. The purpose of 8th graders going out to the beach was to help clean up the trash on the beach, which will prevent the trash from blowing into the ocean. This makes a big difference because we cleaned up some of the trash on the beach that could have gone straight into the ocean. The beach clean up was at Aquatic Park with our social studies teacher, Mr. Guenza. Cleaning the beach helps the ocean and every marine species that are affected by trash. For example, the marine mammals that are in the ocean could eat the plastic. The plastic stays in their bodies for a long period of time. Plastic can’t be decomposed which means the more plastic humans use every day, the more plastic that will soon end up in the ocean or in our environment. Cleaning the beach not only helps the marine species, but it also helps the environment around us. If the environment is clean, that means the air we are breathing is also cleaner. To avoid trash going into the ocean, we can limit the number of straws, plastic bags, cans, bottles, cigarette butts, and other waste that harms the ocean and the species that live there. During our clean up, we picked up about 600 cigarette butts, most of them were broken down and were mixed with the seaweed and kelp on the beach. We also found lots of shapeless plastics like wrappers and loose plastic. One thing that was abundant was microplastics such as styrofoam and plastic nets that have been broken down and buried in the sand. These are plastic that could be eaten by humans. The plastics break down and get into our seafood that we consume. We encourage more 8th graders to go to beach cleanups, there are changes that need to be made. Middle School might seem like a scary place because it might be something new that you are experiencing. Well, middle school is like any new school, everything might be new such as new faces, and new ways of doing things. From my personal experience, middle school was definitely something new for me. As school went on, things got better and things got a lot easier. I started getting the hang of things and how middle school works. One of the hardest thing I think 6th graders go through is switching form class to class, because back in Elementary school, everything happened in 1 or 2 classrooms. Your schedules will take you a little time to remember but other than that middle school isn’t that much different than Elementary school.
-Kathy Last week at Francisco Middle School is Healthy Rams Week. Healthy Rams Week is when there is one activity you can participate in, at lunch. These activities include Pledge Day, Drug Free, Wheel Trivia, Awareness Day + Pig Lungs, and Red Ribbon Jeopardy. When students participate, they recivice a ram ticket, and these events were happening in the lower yard at lunch.
-Kathy The start of stress has just barely began, starting to applying for high schools. I have a few high schools in mind but my number one choice is Lowell High School. The reason Lowell is my number one choice is because I truly thinks that Lowell is going to be successful for my future. Lowell is there to teach you what the next step in life is and all about colleges and applying to colleges. Lowell is a very difficult to get into, so I have to keep in mind that I may not be accepted. That does not mean that I won’t put in my best effort, it just means that trying to get in is stressful and I have to remember that not everyone who applies will get in, including myself. Another thing I worry about is the work and the new environment. Adapting to new environments are hard. For example, when I came to middle school, trying to get used to middle school was difficult. The one main thing I know is, that the work and homework at Lowell could be challenging and difficult. I know there will be a lot of homework at Lowell but at the same time I am excited to start something new. Lowell has a lot of academic classes as long with tons of clubs you can join. I want to be challenged, and to be really successful in high school and in the future.
Written by Kathy. Edited by Jacky. Lowell is the oldest school west of Mississippi and was founded in 1856. Someone might want to go to Lowell if they want to be challenged. Lowell is a challenging school to go to and not only that, but trying to get accepted is difficult as well. But from my experience at the Lowell back to school night, everyone there was helpful and supportive of us going to Lowell.
Lowell gives you many choices when it comes to picking classes. Lowell is known for teaching students what their next step in life is and giving students all the academic support they need. Even though there are many good things about Lowell, there are also some things people want them to change. Many people do not like the way they enroll students, because they make students take a test to get in, as well as looking at their academic skills from middle school. This may change in the future. |
