Last year at Francisco Middle School, school days started at 9:10 on a regular day. This year, school days start at 9:00. The first bell rings at 8:55 which means you get 5 minutes to go to your locker and to get to class on time. Even though we have longer passing periods, getting to school on time is harder because it’s in the morning. One reason why schools should start at 9:10 again is so that fewer kids get to school late, because you have that extra 10 minutes to get here. This year more and more students are arriving at school late because we only have 5 minutes to get to class, and sometimes there are problems getting to school. If some students get to school by bus, then sometimes the buses break down, which causes them to be late because they have to switch buses. When you are late to class, not only do you get tardy, but you miss class time. When you miss class time, you are missing on what the class is learning and maybe even classwork that needs to be done. So, when school starts a little later, it can prevent some students from being late to school and missing a lot of classwork. Some students come really late and completely miss 1st period, or some come just a few minutes after the bell. Regardless of what time the students come, they still miss out things when coming late.

Have you considered timing yourself to see how much you are on your phone or staring on a screen one day…? Well, on average, us teens spend four and a half hours on their phones a day. That is a lot of time just staring at your phone or electronic. The study said that teens spend four and a half hours on their phones. Most teens spend way more time than just that on their screens. When you are on your phone or staring at a screen for too much, it can affect your focus on schoolwork or your brain. 11,000 kids and teens went to get MRI’s to check their brains and track how screen time affects us over time. From the video we saw in social studies called “60 minutes”, it shows that the population of smartphone users grew really fast. When the smartphone population grew, that made social media population grow as well. Most people I know mostly spend their screen time on Instagram, Youtube, or Snapchat. For people who game, they spend most of their time on Fortnite or any game they prefer to play. When kids have free time, whether that is after school, during school, on break, or on weekends most kids get to go on their phones. Screen time is used for checking their social media or searching something up on the internet. Most teens use their smartphone to text friends or facetime friends and not for useful stuff, but it’s also said that when teens go on their phone to contact friends, they feel more connected to each other. Some moms set a timer on their child’s phone, so they only have limited time to go on their phones each day, but other than that, you are in charge of how much you stare at your screen a day. One thing to keep in mind is that, if you spend too much time on your screens, it can affect you. Students should have food in class because you don’t want them to starve, and when they get hungry, they can’t think straight on classwork or projects. If we do let them eat food during class they could have more energy to focus on work or projects for class or school. This should be during 1st period and 4th period. (After Lunch.) Usually, in the morning, some students live far away from FMS like an hour by bus and in the morning they sometimes don’t have enough time to eat breakfast and by the time they get to school, they are unable to finish or start eating their food. Also, people don’t like school food because it’s either disgusting to them or it doesn’t appeal to their appetite. Some classes make you unable to eat in their classrooms, making the student more hungry and more easily distracted. This could impact the students day by making them irritated and limiting their patience.
New Year Resolutions are goals you make before the year is over (Best start in November). The purpose of them is to help you achieve your personal goals. If you have a goal that you want to achieve in the future, you can help yourself by making that goal your New Year’s Resolution. If you preserver then you might achieve the goal. A good way to achieve that goal is to put your mindset to it. Once you know what your goal is, then work towards that goal every day. If you be consistent with your goal, it makes it easier for your mind to believe you can achieve that goal. You should really consider, making a new years resolution because it can help you experience new things and achieve a goal in your life.
After middle school, you would start thinking about what your future would entail. Your future consists of getting a job, so now is the time to start to have a working experience. When getting a job, you would need a resume so that the person who is thinking of hiring you can see why you deserve the job that you are applying for.
A resume should include what your education level is, your skills, your work experience, any accomplishments, education, anything you do for your free time, etc. You can make your own design or have one provided for you, a template. For the Francisco Media Staff, we used templates that were on Google Docs, we’re pretty sure you guys are familiar with that. So first, to get the templates you go to the front/home page. There should be “Start a new document” that is in dark gray. Then look for Template Gallery, you should be able to see it. When “Template Gallery” is pressed, there should be many templates including resume. There are letters, work, sales, etc. that are also really helpful. Look for resume and you should see 5 different designs that look different, but they all have the same idea. The designs that are listed are Coral, Swiss, Serif, Modern Writer, and Spearmint. I, Karen, used Serif to make my resume. I, Zachary, used Swiss. After you’ve chosen your template, you need to start thinking about what to put on the resume. Such as, what experience, skills, etc do you have? Experiences to put can be if you play sport(s), if you volunteer, etc. Experiences we could put on our resume can be being a Francisco Media Staff and a Francisco Track Runner. You can add your own categories too. This is optional but you can make an “About Me” section where you put in your hobbies, what you like, etc. For skills, you can put what you are good at. If you are good at math, you can add that in. If you took musical instrument classes, put that down too! There are many other things you can put on it, think about it! There should be a section already listed on the template which is languages. If you can speak a language, add that into your resume. In Francisco Middle School, they give you awards or certificates if you are in a sport, have a 4.0 GPA, etc. Remember to add your education. Where did you go for elementary school, kindergarten, middle school? We know that many people in this school attend chinese school. You can add that too. https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/?tgif=c&ftv=1 Here is the link to the templates on Google Docs. Remember to update your information every time you want to get another job, so that you can add new information. It is helpful to prepare yourself around this time so that you can get ahead of competition. Hopefully this helps you and encourages to do make a resume. The Beach Clean up took place on Sunday, December 9. People from the 8th grade went out to help if they wished to. The purpose of 8th graders going out to the beach was to help clean up the trash on the beach, which will prevent the trash from blowing into the ocean. This makes a big difference because we cleaned up some of the trash on the beach that could have gone straight into the ocean. The beach clean up was at Aquatic Park with our social studies teacher, Mr. Guenza. Cleaning the beach helps the ocean and every marine species that are affected by trash. For example, the marine mammals that are in the ocean could eat the plastic. The plastic stays in their bodies for a long period of time. Plastic can’t be decomposed which means the more plastic humans use every day, the more plastic that will soon end up in the ocean or in our environment. Cleaning the beach not only helps the marine species, but it also helps the environment around us. If the environment is clean, that means the air we are breathing is also cleaner. To avoid trash going into the ocean, we can limit the number of straws, plastic bags, cans, bottles, cigarette butts, and other waste that harms the ocean and the species that live there. During our clean up, we picked up about 600 cigarette butts, most of them were broken down and were mixed with the seaweed and kelp on the beach. We also found lots of shapeless plastics like wrappers and loose plastic. One thing that was abundant was microplastics such as styrofoam and plastic nets that have been broken down and buried in the sand. These are plastic that could be eaten by humans. The plastics break down and get into our seafood that we consume. We encourage more 8th graders to go to beach cleanups, there are changes that need to be made. Energy, in general, is the key to powering up machines and having a life. Without it, there would be nothing. In today’s era, we are harvesting more than we could consume, and consuming more than the environment could handle. In today’s era there are many human errors that destroy the fragile ecosystems the once created this wonderful oasis. Too many trails and errors have taken place at the test. If you don’t get the reference it means that too many trail and errors have taken place at the actual grounds where the final product would go.
The fragile ecosystems are being destroyed as we breathe and live in luxury. In order to take action, countries from around the globe must participate in this act because one could not be without the other. The only way to eliminate all the things that we have done in the world is to stand as one. Our idea of a “clean” globe would be without oil drilling, without overhunting, and without pollution. Without these things the world would slowly change into the paradise it once was, where everything was equal and there was no possession. In the far north and far south there are ice caps, and as most of the human population knows, there is global warming. With global warming in effect, the ice caps are melting. Since they are melting, the environment that many animals call home is being destroyed as we live in an oasis. For example, one animal that is being heavily impacted are the polar bears. They are on the top of the food chain, so you would think that they would thrive, but you’re wrong. They are slowly dying because they rely on the smaller animals below the top of the food chain. Polar bears are also used to colder climates rather than warmer climates, so this transition would make them suffer. If the ice caps do completely melt, then the ocean levels would rise to the point where all the coasts in every corner in every continent would be completely covered with water. Also, if the ice caps melt, the convection currents, which are “run” by salt, would cause the ocean salt content to become imbalanced due to the excess freshwater in the ocean, which would mess up the convection currents. Now you have a glimpse of what would happen if we proceed to destroy the wonderful paradise that we call home. If you felt and saw what the poor animals in the wild had to go through, what would you do to take action? What would you do in order to prevent the destruction that is going to arrive in the next few centuries? |
